Firefighters injured in two-alarm high rise fire
Update: The Associated Press reports one firefighter is in critical condition at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. Eight others were treated for smoke inhalation. At least three residents have injuries that don’t appear to be serious.
Flames broke out early this morning at the Norman Blumberg Apartments at 24th and Jefferson streets. Crews arrived around 5:45 a.m., and the second alarm was called about 45 minutes later.
As Action News reports, seven firefighters and three civilians were injured in the blaze that had flames and smoke shooting through eighth floor windows. The fire was mostly under control by 7 a.m. WHYY’s Lizz Fiedler stopped at the scene just a short while ago, where rescue workers surveyed the situation.
