RAISE: Rally 4 Rizzo
Friday, February 21. 7:30pm – 10pm. Rizzo Rink, 1001 South Front Street. Rizzo Rink, where “hockey is a religion and a way of life,” is rallying to raise money for upkeep this Friday. The rink, built beneath I-95 at Front Street and Washington Ave, is a community staple and unique use of the space often left vacant under I-95. The fundraiser will include a DJ, pizza, pretzels, raffles, gifts and face painting. Cost: $20.
EXPLORE: Hawthorne Hall Open House
Saturday, February 22. 11am – 1pm. Hawthorne Hall, 3849 Lancaster Ave. This weekend Gray Area, an experiment and public dialogue to encourage new ways of thinking about older buildings in Philadelphia, will lead guided tours of Hawthorne Hall. The Gray Area team will discuss the history of the building and ask visitors for memories of the historic building at 3849 Lancaster Avenue. The Hall, built in 1895 as a social hall for fraternal organizations, was temporarily opened during the recent Hidden City Festival. Free.
LEARN: Mother Bethel AME Burial Ground Revealed
Saturday, February 22. 11am-Noon. Independence Visitor Center, 6th and Market streets. Historian Terry Buckalew will discuss the exciting discovery of the long-forgotten Mother Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church Burial Ground beneath Weccacoe Playground in Queen Village. The burial ground is the resting place for more than 5,000 18th- and 19th-century African Americans. Free.
SUPPORT: 4th Annual Party for the Market
Saturday, February 22. 7:30pm – 11:30pm. Reading Terminal Market, 51 N. 12th Street. Reading Terminal Market supporters can visit the nation’s oldest continuously operating farmers’ market after hours this weekend for the fourth annual Party for the Market. The fundraiser falls on Reading Terminal’s 122nd birthday and will raise money for the Reading Terminal Market Preservation Trust. Merchants will serve a wide variety of bites and beverages, and live entertainment is scheduled for two stages. The dress code is black-tie optional. Cost: Ages 21-35 $75, General admission $175.
HACK: Philly Codefest
Saturday, February 22 at 8am – Sunday, February 23 at 1pm. Drexel University’s URBN Center, 3501 Market Street. Philly Codefest is a two-day coding competition that challenges participants to turn data into real world solutions. Participants organize into two teams and build new prototypes and tools for topics ranging from health care to government and civic solutions, media and digital arts, data science, cyber security and more. The weekend kicks off with a meet-up at 6pm on Friday, Feb. 21 at the URBN Center and coding begins the next morning at 8am. Free.
