A man and his 8-year-old son were killed this afternoon in a crash between two personal watercraft in Atlantic County, police say.

The pair collided with a 55-year-old Egg Harbor woman in the Patcong Creek in Somers Point around 4:45 p.m. as the operators rounded a sharp curve from opposite directions, according to a New Jersey State Police release.

The father and son, both from Maryland, were taken to Shore Memorial Hospital and pronounced dead. The woman suffered a broken wrist.

Police say that the father was sitting behind his son when the crash occurred, adding that there was no immediate indication that alcohol was a factor.

“Although the crash remains under investigation, the limited sight line at the location of the crash and the fact the the boy was closest to the PWC steering and controls are being looked at as possible contributing circumstances,” the release said.

The craft were impounded at a nearby marina pending further forensic examination by New Jersey State Police detectives, according to the release.
