A 41-year-old man has been arrested after police say more than 1,200 bags of heroin were seized from his home.

Wilmington police say Javier Ayala was taken into custody Monday following an investigation into drug sales by members of the Drug, Vice and Organized Crime Division.

Sgt. Andrea Janvier says a search warrant was executed at Ayala’s home where officers found 1,286 bags of heroin in addition to other items. Janvier says Ayala, who wasn’t at home during the search, was later stopped in his vehicle by officers where he was found with 50 bags of heroin.

Ayala faces multiple charges, including possession with the intent to deliver heroin. Ayala was committed to Young Correctional Institution after failing to post bail. It wasn’t immediately clear if he has an attorney.
