Delaware leaders welcome TD Bank to Wilmington
TD Bank received a warm welcome from city, county and state officials as it opened a new location in downtown Wilmington.
The bank moved into the Hercules building located on Market Street and will create 35 new jobs initially as it expands credit card services.
During the opening ceremony, Gov. Jack Markell told bank officials they made the right move by investing in Delaware.
“We are very proud of our financial workforce here in Delaware,” said Markell. “We aim every single day to make it better and provide new opportunities for young people to understand what these jobs look like and how they can be effective at them.”
Markell also boasted about how state and local officials work together on projects that are in the best interest of the residents and businesses and suggested the Cherry Hill, NJ based company should bring more to Delaware.
“I know that you’re based in a very nice state not too far from here but I think in terms of like looking for a place where the government is functional, where people check their egos at the door regardless of political party and work together, I think you’ve found it,” he said.
The bank was also welcomed by U.S. Sen. Chris Coons (D-Delaware) and U.S. Rep. John Carney (D-Delaware).
“I’m delighted to be here from the House side of the Capital to throw a warm Delaware embrace around TD Bank,” said Carney who added that he’s glad to see the landmark building bustling again.
Sen. Coons said this is the first step in what could be an ongoing opportunity for Delaware.
“While the size of the office initially filled by this credit card operation may be modest, all of us are here because we are excited about the huge potential,” said Coons.
In addition to official opening the new location, TD Bank also made a $50,000 donation to the Delaware Financial Literacy Institute.
The organization provides free financial education services to low-income individuals.
