Delaware Emergency Response Team surveys debris along beaches

The DNREC’s Emergency Prevention and Response Team began surveying beaches today where large quantities of debris had washed up.

According to the DNREC, the debris is primarily from upstream out of state sources.

“Our Response Team surveyed beaches from Roosevelt Inlet up to Broadkill today (Thursday) to assess the extent of the debris, and our Environment Protection Officers are ready to assist beach residents with proper disposal of any potentially hazardous materials found,” Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control Secretary Collin O’Mara said in a statement.

According to members of the emergency response team, large quantities of trash spread eight to 10 feed wide in some areas along the beach at Broadkill.

The debris consisted mainly of plastic bottles and caps, cans and Styrofoam pieces.  In once case, three capped syringes were recovered from the debris.
