Del. State Police now taking tips by text

Delaware State Police are now able to accept anonymous tips from the public via text message.

As of Tuesday, people can use their cell phones to send a text to 274637 (CRIMES) using the keyword “DSP.”

By capitalizing on the texting craze, authorities are hoping to encourage more people to provide information.

State Police spokesman Sgt. Paul Shavack says it is yet another attempt to counter the ever-present culture of not cooperating.

“We are providing an anonymous and more convenient way to generate tips and information on crimes and criminal activity,” Shavack said. “We hope by implementing this program, it strengthens our partnership with the community, and we will be able to gather and obtain more information than we would normally receive through traditional methods.”

The anonymous tip will be forwarded to the appropriate investigator or unit.

Residents can also call Crime Stoppers (1-800-TIP-3333) or sent tips on the Internet at www.tipsubmit.com.
