Police in Wilmington say extra officers were called in to a shooting scene after a large crowd gathered and some threw rocks and bottles at officers.

Chief Bobby Cummings said after a man was shot in the chest Sunday afternoon, a crowd assembled and several officers were hit by objects. Police said Monday that the 23-year-old man was taken to Christiana Hospital in critical condition. Police say the circumstances surrounding the shooting are under investigation.

Cummings says New Castle County police officers and state troopers already in the city for the pope’s visit to Philadelphia helped with crowd control. He says there were “a couple of arrests,” including a man who drew a knife near the police tape.

Several blocks around the site were cordoned off Sunday night.
