Concession workers protest at Winter Classic in Philadelphia

Around 200 protesters from “Unite Here” local union 274, are expected to rally at today’s Winter Classic hockey game at Citizen’s Bank Park. They will gather in support of concession workers’ on-going demands for a new contract. 

Aramark employees who sell beer and food have been negotiating a new contract since February 2011. The company made a final offer in September, which workers rejected. Since then, workers have rallied several times but not much has changed.  

Rosslyn Wuchinich, Staff Director with Unite Here Local 274, says after the game, protesters will use props, such as scoreboards, to highlight the faceoff. 

“There will be a big street theater to demonstrate what happens when workers come together and how in fact, this can be a win-win situation where Aramark can continue to be a very successful corporation while the workers are able to better share in the company’s success,” said Wuchinich.

Concession workers, who earn an average of $11 per hour, are asking for better wages, health care, steady hours and a three year contract.

A spokesperson says Aramark wants to work out a deal.  “We’re disappointed that the union turned down an offer containing the highest wage increases ever offered at Citizen’s Bank Park,” said Nicole Kennedy.   “However we are hopeful that we will soon reach an agreement that works for everyone. We’re dedicated to treating all of our employees with dignity and respect, as they are an important part of our business and we greatly appreciate their contributions.”
