CHCA honors three local residents for community service

 

More than 200 people turned out last night for Chestnut Hill Community Association’s annual dinner meeting. As civic meetings go, this one was more entertaining than most; Guest speaker (Jane Golden), dinner, desserts and awards.

The CHCA held the meeting at the Presbyterian Church of Chestnut Hill to both reflect back on the year’s events and honor a few residents who went beyond the call of duty as a citizen.

 

This year’s winners

The Chestnut Hill Award – Lawrence D. McEwen

He was recognized for his leadership over the past 16-months of the CHCA Negotiating Group. This group works with Chestnut Hill College to raise any concerns residents might have with the college’s planned development of Sugar Loaf Hill. McEwen heads the firm Lawrence D. McEwen Architects at 6825 Germantown Ave.

 

Meritorious Service Award – Marilyn Paucker

She was honored for her efforts working with donors to keep the Chestnut Hill Center for Enrichment open for one more year. Paucker, who serves as CHCE’s board president, had announced in a letter dated Nov. 28 that the senior activity center would have to close, in large part, due to dwindling financial support.

 

Distinguished Service Award – James A. Black. Jr.

He was honored for maintaining many of Chestnut Hill’s public green spaces. Many of these areas are places the city crews don’t have time for. He can be seen around the Hill cutting the grass, raking leaves, and pruning trees.
