Camden County police chiefs decide against countywide department involvement

Some of Camden County’s police chiefs have decided the plans for a countywide department aren’t for them.

The Camden County Police Chiefs Association says the freeholder board was forging ahead with the plan without consulting the committee charged with forming what would be New Jersey’s first countywide department, as the Associated Press reports.

Freeholder Director Louis Cappelli says the move to abandon the plan shows an interest by police chiefs to protect their jobs, not taxpayers. Under the plan, towns can decide whether to join the county force.
