Activity in the Christiana area has heated up with the expansion of the nearby mall. It was recently announced that a 17-screen movie theater and a Cabela’s sporting goods superstore will open on the north edge of the mall property in 2014.
Books-A-Million has been reporting stronger results, thanks, in part to sales of the 50 Shades of Gray series of novels. However, the company has been posting losses, with the Anderson family making a bid to acquire the company. The family owns slightly more than half of the outstanding shares of the company. That proposal was later dropped.
Bookstore chains have been dealing with the issues that led to the closing of Border’s stores, including the growing use of electronic readers, a market dominated by online giant, Amazon.com.
Shares of Books-A-Million have been trading at $2.64 each. Common stock of Books-A-Million, Inc. is traded on the NASDAQ Global Select Market under the symbol BAMM.
The company has 258 stores in 31 states and the District of Columbia with a large store format under the Books-A-Million, Books & Co. and 2nd & Charles names. The stores offer books, music and games.
