Wilkers underwent surgery this week. Doctors left the bullet in place for now. It caused no apparent brain or nerve injury.

Wilkers was shot Sunday when he and his partner tried to stop an SUV for a traffic violation. The SUV sped off before three people got out and fired at Wilkers.

Three Wilmington men were charged in the case. Frederick Gray, who is 21, is charged with attempted murder. Jared Wiggins and Ronald Boyce also were arrested and face lesser charges.
