Christie asks for FEMA aid for blizzard clean up

New Jersey Governor Chris Christie is seeking federal disaster aid to help pay for the costs of this week’s blizzard. Christie made the announcement in Monmouth County, one of the areas that got the most snow.

 

The Governor says it was the fifth biggest snowstorm in New Jersey in the last hundred years. In the letter to the President, Christie says conditions in 13 counties should qualify for federal disaster assistance.

 

“We will hopefully be able to move rapidly through the process of getting the damage assessment done and then getting federal reimbursements to the municipalities and counties across the state who have incurred extraordinary expense,” said Christie.

 

The Governor says state workers did a good job rescuing hundreds of people from stranded vehicles in the height of the storm and plowing to make most major roads passable. He says local officials need to take responsibility for the slow pace of clearing side streets.
