A 22-year-old man died this afternoon after he was pulled from the ocean in northern Ocean County, authorities said.

John A. Crimmins, 22, of Yonkers, N.Y., was swimming in the ocean off Mantoloking with friends around 2:30 p.m. when lifeguards called 911 and reported that he had suddenly disappeared from their sight, said Al Della Fave, Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office spokesman.

“All area lifeguard stands were notified, and an extensive search from the air, shore, and sea was conducted by the US Coast Guard, New Jersey State Police, and fire/first aid units from all surrounding municipalities,” he said.

Around 3:08 p.m., Bay Head Improvement Association lifeguards located the unresponsive man in the beach area at Strickland Street in Bay Head and brought him ashore, according to Della Fave.

Lifeguards initiated CPR, which was then administered by Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office Det. Mitch Remig and Point Beach First Aid Squad members.

The man was transported to Ocean Medical Center in Brick, where he was pronounced dead upon arrival, Della Fave said.

Authorities have not released the man’s name.

The Ocean County Prosecutors Office, Ocean County Sheriff’s Department CSI, and Ocean County Medical Examiner’s Office are investigating.
