Artists specializing in glass to hold International conference in South Jersey

15th annual International Flameworking Conference this weekend is a hat tip to South Jersey’s glass heritage.
 
Diane Wright, the Curator of Glass at the Chrysler Museum of Art, will be the special guest speaker for the 15th annual International Flameworking Conference this weekend at the Salem Community College (SCC) in Carney’s Point.
 
The conference brings some of the world’s most renown glass artists to South Jersey, a region with a rich heritage in glass making.
 
Wright’s presentation on the history of flameworking – also known as lampworking – is free and open to the public.  The talk takes place Friday evening, Mar. 20 at the Carney’s Point Campus’ Davidow Hall Theatre.   
 
A reception to honor the conference’s featured artists, Junichi Kojima and David Willis, will follow.
 
Those attending the entire conference will find continental breakfast each morning plus exhibits, demonstrations and a panel discussion on illuminated borosilicate sculpture at the college’s Samuel H. Jones Glass Education Center.
 
The center is located near the historic site of the United Glass Company in Wistarburgh, the first successful glass works in colonial America.  Glass became a key industry for the local economy as South Jersey emerged as the center of U.S. commercial glass manufacture.
 
Keeping with that tradition, SCC is the only college in the nation that offers an Associates degree in Applied Science for Scientific Glass Technology.
 
A $175 online registration is available until Mar 17.  At the door registration for the entire conference will cost $200.  A one day registration for Sunday only costs $50.  Shuttle bus service is available between remote parking at Salem County vo-tech schools to the Glass Education Center.
