The news is in the mail: some PECO electric discounts going away

Some PECO customers are receiving bad news in the mail.

215,000 customers in the region who get their electricity from PECO will receive a mailing in the coming months telling them their discounts are expiring by the end of next year. Ben Armstrong is a spokesman for the utility. He said the discounts are ending so competing providers are on an even playing field.

“Beginning on January first 2012 the discounted generation prices currently offered to PECO’s residential heating and our off peak customers will be phased out,” said Armstrong.

The discount will be cut in half on New Years Day and eliminated completely on December 31st of 2012.

Currently about 141,000 residential customers receive the 45 percent discount for using electric heating during the winter months, and another 65,000 receive a 70 percent discount for having their hot water heaters connected to a separate meter that cuts off electricity during peak hours. Nine thousand customers receive both discounts.
