In this hour we’ll talk with writer Ian Buruma about his new book, Their Promised Land: My Grandparents in Love and War. It’s an account of a love sustained through the terror and separation of two world wars and the thousands of love letters sent in the darkest hours of the century. He is the Luce Professor of Democracy, Human Rights, and Journalism at Bard College.  His previous books include Year Zero, the China Lover, Murder in Amsterdam, Occidentalism, God’s Dust, Behind the Mask, The Wages of Guild, Bad Elements, and Taming the Gods.

He speaks at the Free Library of Philadelphia tonight.
