Why are more women freezing their eggs?

Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, 36, announced over the weekend that she would freeze her eggs while she considers her political future, which could include a bid for the senate or presidency. She says the decision is motivated by a desire to feel “more in control” of her life.

Most women aren’t considering a run for higher office, but many are putting off having children to prioritize other life goals like building a career and finding the right partner. And freezing eggs can be an attractive option, although expensive and sometimes arduous. 

Today, we’re looking at what that process actually looks like, why some women are opting in and others aren’t, and what AOC’s decision to speak publicly about her decision means for the discourse.
