Weight loss and your ‘resting metabolism’

Listen 00:48:44

Guests: Kevin Hall, Janine Kyrillos, Gina Kolata

To lose weight, should you go for a five mile run or pass on that slice of chocolate cake?  As most of us know, taking off even a few pounds can seem impossible.  But thanks to some new, surprising research we now understand more about what works and what doesn’t when it comes to slimming down. We’ll talk with KEVIN HALL, a Senior Investigator at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland about his recent study of “Biggest Loser” TV show contestants and why their bodies were programed to gain back the weight they’d lost. And we’ll get some real-life weight management suggestions from JANINE KYRILLOS, a Clinical Assistant Professor of Medicine and Director of Jefferson’s Comprehensive Weight Management Program at Bala and GINA KOLATA, science writer for The New York Times and author of Rethinking Thin: The New Science of Weight Loss and the Myths and Realities of Dieting.
