The Death of Santini: A Story of a Father and His Son

“To make my father human, I had to lie,” writes novelist and memoirist PAT CONROY about his infamous father, Col. Donald Conroy. His father is better known as the abusive Marine Corps fighter pilot father, the subject of his 1976 book, “The Great Santini,” portrayed in the 1979 film of the same name by Robert Duvall. Conroy returns to Radio Times to talk about reconciling his relationship with his father, after building a career writing about his family and their troubles for close to 40 years. Conroy says he wanted to examine his family wreckage one last time, which is captured in his new book, “The Death of Santini: A Story of a Father and His Son.”
