Heading down to the shore this summer? You might not realize it but it takes a lot of work and money to maintain coastal beaches. New Jersey has 127 miles of coast filled with beckoning beaches. They are one of the Garden State’s big draws, contributing to a $40 billion tourism industry. But all that sand is under constant assault by waves, tides and storms that erode the shoreline and expose billions of dollars worth of coastal property to the ravages of ocean. But should taxpayers foot the bill for beach replenishment and preservation? We’ll ask guests THOMAS HERRINGTON, professor of coastal engineering at Stevens Institute of Technology and ANDREW COBURN, associate director of the Program for the Study of Developed Shorelines at Western Carolina University if pumping sand and rebuilding beaches is really worth the investment.
