Mantua: West Philadelphia’s “Promise Zone”

Listen

Hour 2
Guests: DeWayne Drummond, Farah Jimenez and Lucy Kerman

The West Philadelphia neighborhood of Mantua has been named by the Obama administration as a one of the nation’s five Promise Zones. The designation comes with preference for government grants to help grow the local economy, reduce unemployment and crime, and improve educational resources, as well as support for collaborative efforts to encourage transformation. While not the poorest neighborhood in the City, 51% of Mantua’s residents live in poverty and 13.6% are unemployed. Joining Marty in the studio to help us understand what the new federal program might accomplish and how it could benefit the residents of Mantua are DEWAYNE DRUMMOND, President of the Mantua Civic Association, FARAH JIMENEZ of the People’s Emergency Center and LUCY KERMAN, Drexel University’s Vice Provost for University and Community Partnerships.
