A government report on the two Iowa farms linked to the salmonella outbreak in eggs describes filthy conditions in and around the henhouses – rats, maggots, and manure piled 8 feet high.  A half a billion eggs were recalled last month when 1500 people became sick with salmonella.  And last week, 8,500 pounds of hamburger was recalled after it was linked to a rare E. coli strain that sickened three people.  This hour, how safe is our food and what can we do to make it safer?  Guest host Tracy Matisak talks with USA Today reporter ELIZABETH WEISE and Saint Joseph’s University food marketing professor NANCY CHILDS about the flaws in our food system.
