Director EDWARD ZWICK’s new film, Trial by Fire, examines the case of Cameron Todd Willingham, who was convicted and executed in Texas for killing his three daughters in a house fire. The film examines whether or not the state killed an innocent man. It stars Jack O’Connell stars as Willingham and Laura Dern as Elizabeth Gilbert, a mother who uncovers inconsistencies in the case and fights to prove Willingham’s innocence. Zwick has directed many films, including About Last Night, Glory, which won three Academy awards, The Last Samurai, Legends of the Fall, and Blood Diamond. He also produced Shakespeare in Love and Traffic, and co-created the television series thirtysomething. Zwick comes in to talk about this new film, the Willingham case, and his career directing and producing in Hollywood. Then, drivers for Uber and Lyft went on strike Wednesday to draw attention to their low pay in relation to their CEOs salaries. Rutgers professor TODD WOLFSON will join us to talk about the strike and the complexities of organizing in the era of the gig economy.
