Deadlines, motivation, oh my!

Listen

“If only I had one more week to get this done,” we often say to ourselves in utter despair when working under a crushing deadline. But do we really do better when we extend our deadline and have more time? Not really, finds new research.

Dr. Dan Gottlieb discuss deadlines — why we need them and why we hate them with social psychologist Heidi Grand Halvorson. They’ll also talk about motivation in general and the science behind it.

Heidi Grant Halvorson researches, writes books, teaches, and travels the world talking about how motivation works. She translates the science of performance and productivity into strategies for use at work and in life. She’s the Associate Director of Columbia Business School’s Motivation Science Center. Her latest book is 8 Motivational Challenges: A Short Guide to Lighting a Fire Under Anyone – Including Yourself.
