Only one member of the inner circle around Gen. David Petraeus, the architect of the surge in Iraq and just named to replace ousted Gen. Stanley McChrystal in Afghanistan, speaks with an Australian accent. DAVID KILCULLEN is one of the handful of men who literally wrote the book on modern counterinsurgency warfare, helping design the Iraq surge and the strategy the U.S. military is pursuing worldwide. The former Australian infantry officer cut his teeth on insurgencies studying Indonesia, and has spent the last few decades building an expertise that now fuels the U.S. war on terror. He is a Non-Resident Senior Fellow at the Center for a New American Security, and is speaking at the World Affairs Council in Philadelphia tonight. But first, he’s on today’s Radio Times, talking about his new book, Counterinsurgency, and the U.S. wars he helped design.
