Bullying in Philadelphia Public Schools

Listen

Hour 1

On Tuesday the Philadelphia Commission on Human Relations released its report on bullying in Philadelphia public schools.  The report, “Widening the Circle of Our Concern”, is based on 11 public hearings held in the aftermath of attacks on Asian American students at South Philadelphia High School over the past two years.  It contains eight findings and nine recommendations and says that the district “is not doing enough to prevent and resolve problems associated with inter-group conflicts and violence.” Kay Kyungsun Yu, chair of the Philadelphia Commission on Human Relations, joins us to talk about the report.  We’ll also hear from Tomas Hanna, the School District of Philadelphia’s Superintendent of Academic Support, and Tony Valdes, CEO of the Children’s Crisis Treatment Center, an organization that runs a program for the children and families of Philadelphia’s West African community.
