Black Lives Matter Matters

Listen 00:48:44

Guests: Melanie McCoy, James Peterson, Ralph Young

Black Lives Matter has been challenging numerous 2016 presidential contenders this election cycle, taking candidates to task about their specific proposals to address racism in America. Today, we take a look at the movement and discuss its origins, demands, organization, tactics and the effect their message will have on the upcoming presidential election. Marty and her guests will also compare Black Lives Matter to previous protest movements in America. We’ll hear from the head of the Philadelphia chapter of the Black Lives Matter, MELANIE McCOY. We’ll then be joined by JAMES PETERSON, director of Africana Studies and Associate Professor of English at Lehigh University, and by RALPH YOUNG, professor of history at Temple University and the author of Dissent: The History of an American Idea.
