Last week, South Dakota passed an abortion bill that requires a woman to wait a three days and receive counseling before she can get an abortion — this is the longest waiting period in any state. In Ohio, the state legislature is currently debating a bill that would ban abortions after a fetal heartbeat is detected, as early as six weeks into pregnancy. In state capitols around the country, dozens of abortion-restricting bills have been proposed and with Republican majorities controlling many state legislatures, some of them will likely pass. This hour, we’ll look at the battle over abortion in the states. Marty talks with Washington Post health policy reporter N.C. AIZENMAN about the proposed anti-abortion bills. Then we’ll hear from abortion rights advocate JENNIFER BOULANGER, executive director of the Allentown Women’s Center, and abortion rights proponent CHARLENE BASHORE, legislative director for Pennsylvania Pro-Life Federation.
