Greeting cards and their meaning

Have you bought a greeting card recently?  For Father’s Day, a birthday, a graduation?  Scan the shelves and you’ll find card companies are expanding their offerings to keep up with social and cultural changes.  Hallmark is coming out with a line of cards next year that addresses cancer and terminal illness, reflecting a new openness with end of life issues. And with e-cards the selection is even wider – gay marriage, infertility, lost pets and more.  So what do our cards say about who we are?  Why do we send them and how do we pick the perfect one?  We’ll explore greeting cards this hour with DAVID ELLIS DICKERSON, an author and former greeting card writer, and EMILY WEST, an Associate Professor of Communication at University of Massachusetts, Amherst.
