Wounded Delaware State Police trooper released from hospital

A Delaware State Police trooper who was shot in the line of duty earlier this week was released from a Newark hospital on Thursday evening. 

The trooper, 26-year-old Cpl. Lloyd M. McCann, was released from the Christiana Hospital Trauma Center and will continue to recover at home with family, according to the DSP.

“The men and women of the Delaware State Police, along with Corporal McCann’s family, wish to thank the community for the tremendous outpouring of support, thoughts and prayers, during this time and his continued recovery,” the DSP said in a release. “Corporal McCann is doing very well and is in good spirits.”

McCann was shot in the face and hand while exchanging gunfire with a suspect at approximately 7 a.m. on Wednesday. The suspect, 29-year-old Dennis Hicks of Milford, was fatally shot by McCann.

According to police, the incident occurred after police were called just after midnight to investigate a domestic dispute between Hicks and his girlfriend at a residence in Magnolia.

Hicks fled the scene, but McCann spotted him a few hours later and they engaged in a short vehicle pursuit. Hicks then got out of his car and traded shots with McCann.

McCann, a four-year veteran of the DSP, was placed on administrative leave as an investigation into the shooting continues.
