A man is in critical condition after being shot by Wilmington police, who say he fired at them first.

The department has released few details about the 5:20 p.m. Thursday shooting, including the man’s name or how seriously he was hurt. Alexandra Coppadge, a spokeswoman for the mayor’s office, said Friday that the wounded man was in critical condition.

Police Sgt. Andrea Janvier says the shooting happened during a traffic stop of a car with New Jersey plates.

She says a struggle ensued when police tried to remove one of the car’s occupants, and a man in the car opened fire. That’s when one officer fired back, hitting the man. Janvier did not return a call for further details Friday.
