VRSA case reported in northern Delaware
Delaware Public Health officials say a 70-year-old New Castle County man has been diagnosed with a case of VRSA.
VRSA (vancomycin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus) is a rare type of antimicrobial-resistant staph bacteria. Persons likely to develop VRSA include those who have underlying medical conditions such as diabetes or kidney disease or who have had previous staph infections, according to the Centers for Disease Control. The New Castle County patient, who is 70 years old, is being treated for the infection as an out-0patient. It is the third case of VRSA diagnosed in Delaware in the past three years. The CDC has not documented VRSA to be communicable, but DPH as a precaution investigates any close contacts patients have had.
