Tree falls on monkey house at Brandywine Zoo [photos]

A tree fell on the monkey enclosure at the Brandywine Zoo, forcing zoo workers to round up the primates and find them a temporary home.

Brandywine Zoo officials say the zoo will be closed Saturday as a result of the crash.  Wilmington city officials are worried about the structural safety of the building.

It’s not clear why the 50 to 70 foot tall tree fell down just after 2 p.m. Friday afternoon.  The Wilmington Fire Department joined zoo staff in collecting the animals.

24 monkeys and one bird were moved from the damaged building.  They were taken to zoos in Pennsylvania and New Jersey as part of a cooperative arrangement through the American Zoo and Aquarium Association.
