Top 5 stories to watch in NW Philly
Here’s a look at what we’ll be covering in Northwest Philadelphia this week:
1. The city’s Department of Parks and Recreation wants to erect an elevated ropes course in the Roxborough section of the Wissahickon Valley Park. While still very much in the planning stages, The Tree Top Adventure Course would enable participants to walk and zip line through the tree canopy. Check back next week for more details.
2. Residents at the Abbotsford Homes near East Falls will vote Monday for the next president of the public housing complex’s resident’s association. Five candidates are vying for the spot. Safety has been major part of each hopeful’s platform. Check back next week to see who won.
3. March is Women’s History Month. As part of the celebration, the Ebenezer Maxwell Mansion in Germantown is hosting an event featuring Philadelphia author Cordelia Frances Biddle, who will discuss the lives of women during the Victorian Era. The Declaration of Rights of the Women of United States will also be read. Check back for a full recap.
4. March is also Lovett Founders Month. To that end, the Friends of Lovett Memorial Library will host a lecture on Monday featuring Joseph Minardi, who recently published Historic Architecture in Northwest Philadelphia, 1690-1930s. Check back to learn more about the Mount Airy event.
5. In mid-October, Chesnut Hill Hospital completed a brand new, $40 million wing. The building, which houses a new emergency room and intensive care unit, was the latest piece of a master plan conceived 20 year ago. The expansion was built as part of an effort to make the community hospital a more competitive member of the city’s healthcare landscape. Check back next week for an update.
