Top 5 stories to watch for in Northwest Philadelphia

Here’s a look at a few stories NewsWorks will be covering in Northwest Philadelphia this upcoming week:

1.  Imani Education Circle Charter School in Germantown faces the threat of charter non-renewal before September. Financial concerns and testing scores are cited as reasons. Marcus McCarthy asked around and neither the School District nor Imani knows whether the school will open for the 2014-15 school year.

2.  Musicians, actors and actresses performed at Roxborough’s Gorgas Park on Saturday to honor veterans. Starting with the “walk of honor” for veterans, the event also included performances by Savoy Company and Old Academy Players. Check back this week for Natavan Werbock’s event coverage.

3. The John Story Jenks School in Chestnut Hill recently bolstered its science, technology, engineering and math curricula. To reflect this change, the school is being renamed JS Jenks Academy for the Arts and Sciences. Neema Roshania will report on the details of the change.

4. Nixlot Dameus, a bullying victim turned 15-year-old bodybuilding ace, has led local youths in intensive physical training this summer at Fisher Park in Olney. Check back this week for Brian Hickey’s feature about Dameus’ “Summer Superman Camp.”

5. Since being founded by two mothers in 2010, The Nesting House in Mt. Airy has expanded to two locations. The goal of the business: Provide affordable children’s products that were produced in an eco-friendly manner. Look for Michael Buozis’ article on the local store this week.
