Toomey introduces sharp new attack on immigration politics
Republican U.S. Sen. Pat Toomey has opened a sharp new line of attack on the immigration politics of Democratic challenger Katie McGinty.
In two new TV ads, Toomey accuses McGinty of supporting welfare for immigrants living in the country illegally. He cites her support for a bipartisan immigration bill backed by 14 Senate Republicans in 2013.
McGinty’s campaign likens Toomey’s attack to Donald Trump’s stances and they call it fear-mongering and lying to voters.
The bill would have established a path toward citizenship for an estimated 11 million undocumented immigrants.
It didn’t make them suddenly eligible for every government benefits programs, such as cash assistance or food stamps.
But a congressional analysis projected increased spending on health care programs and tax credits for lower-income working households that are available to immigrants who have legal work status.
