Today is the 48th anniversary of the Voting Rights Act
President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the momentous Voting Rights Act into law on August 6, 1965.
The Act was considered a centerpiece of the civil rights movement, but recently the Supreme Court deemed the part of the law that stopped certain states from changing their voting laws without Justice Department approval to be unconstitutional.
The original Act was signed with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and Rosa Parks in attendance and banned discrimination in voting due to race.
