‘Tis the season to get married

Last April, Manayunk’s “Second Saturday” celebrations relaunched to the timely theme of spring cleaning. And with the prime wedding season approaching this summer, “Get Married in Manayunk” is the motif for May’s festivities.

You don’t need to be scheduled to walk down the aisle to capitalize on the special events happening this Saturday either, says Martha Vidauri, marketing and special events coordinator for the Manayunk Development Corporation, which organizes the “Second Saturday” events.

Here’s our cheat sheet for this Saturday’s “Get Married in Manayunk” event, which will be held from 12 to 5 p.m. at different locations on or near Main Street:

Pick out your future wedding song, like Slayer’s “Altar of Sacrifice”, at Main Street Music. They’re slashing prices by 10 percent for all music sales.

The Art + Science salon and spa is offering 10 percent off of make up and hair services for weddings. And anyone who schedules a facial or massage session on Saturday also receives a 10 percent discount.

For grooms and men alike, wearing an ugly suit to a wedding is like Ed Wood hanging hubcaps from strings in Plan 9 from Outer Space and expecting them to pass for flying saucers. Don’t look like a fool. Try on a tuxedo at Senor Custom Clothiers and indulge in some of their complimentary Patron during your visit.

The Society Hill Dance Academy will perform tutorials on how to command the dance floor on that special day. They’re calling the event “dancing with the wedding stars,” but a more appropriate title may be something like “avoiding catastrophe when stilettos meet an open bar.”

Manayunk’s Second Saturday events will run until October. Vidauri and the folks at the Manayunk Development Corporation see a world of inspiration for more themed Second Saturday events with the breadth of businesses thriving on Main Street.

“Manayunk has the lowest number of closed storefronts than any neighborhood in Philadelphia,” says Vidauri.

Just in case all of this wedding chatter puts you in the mood for a cold one, head up a few blocks to World Wide Beverage on Ridge Avenue in Roxborough for a free barbecue and craft beer tasting from 12 to 5 p.m.

We’ll have more details on that shortly, so be sure to check back soon on NW Playlist.
