Small plane crashes near airport in Hillsborough, N.J.

UPDATED at 1:05 p.m.: A small plane has crashed in Somerset County short of a runway at Central Jersey Regional Airport.

The FAA says the single-engine amateur-built Auriga aircraft plane came down in a yard off Sunnymeade Road in Hillsborough while it was trying to land at the Central Jersey Regional Airport in Manville Wednesday.

The plane is registered to Victor Holmlund of Hillsborough.

The FAA says it’s not known if there were any passengers aboard the craft.

There’s no word on the condition of the pilot.

Video from WABC-TV shows the wreckage of the plane upside down in a field with extensive damage, but with its fuselage mostly intact. The plane landed next to a patch of trees separated from the runway by railroad tracks.
