Search resumes for missing swimmer in Salem County

Authorities have resumed their search for a man who went missing while swimming in a southern New Jersey waterway.

The man was last seen late Sunday afternoon when he entered the Salem River in area not far from the Veterans of Salem County Memorial Bridge.

Witnesses said the man swam to the middle of the river but then appeared to become distressed before he went under the water and disappeared.

Authorities tell the South Jersey Times that the area of the river where the man disappeared is believed to have one of the strongest tidal currents in the state. It has led to deadly consequences for joy-seekers who have jumped from the bridge into the river, only to find themselves swept away by the current.
