Police gunshots kill a man in West Oak Lane

A man died this morning from police gunshots following an altercation in West Oak Lane.

The incident is still under investigation, according to police. Preliminary reports indicate police from the 14th Police District responded to a domestic dispute call at 10:21 this morning to the 7900 block of Rugby Street.

Soon after police arrived it appears someone who was not involved in the dispute interceded with some kind of a weapon, according to Officer Tanya Little.

“Sounds like someone else other than the person involved in the domestic came to the location and they had a weapon and did not obey police commands,” Little said, emphasizing the preliminary nature of the information.

The 32 year old man was pronounced dead at 10:33 a.m. at Albert Einstein Hospital, according to Little.

The incident occurred just blocks away from the site of the West Oak Lane Jazz Festival, as it was being set up. The festival gets underway this afternoon and will run through the weekend.

There is no apparent connection to the festival. Officials from the 14th district have earlier characterized the jazz festival as a typically safe and quiet event.
