Philadelphia Inquirer and Daily News giving away tablets as incentive for e-editions
The owner of Philadelphia’s two daily newspapers is offering an incentive for subscribers to go paperless.
Philadelphia Media Network, owner of the Inquirer and Daily News, will give away tablet computers to electronic edition subscribers. But to get the free gizmo, readers have to buy “an extended subscription.” Company CEO Gregory Osberg isn’t saying yet how long a subscription that will be.
“We are very excited that we will be stimulating and creating a market here in Philadelphia before any other major metropolitan area with respect to tablets and the absorption of content in a mobile form,” said Osberg.
Osberg was not very specific about the tablets, other than the company will not be selling iPads. He also announced changes to Philly.com, including bringing back an online version of the Inquirer’s “Neighbors” section. The Saturday Daily News will be replaced by a sports-only edition.
