Philadelphia Housing Authority working its way back to city control
After two years being run by officials from Washington, the Philadelphia Housing Authority could soon be back in city control.
Nine people have been nominated to be part of the new Philadelphia Housing Authority Board, including two tenants, former Judge Nelson Diaz and the city’s Chief Integrity Officer Joan Markman.
Council President Darrell Clarke says there will be public hearings to review the picks.
“We’ll be holding a hearing within the next week and a half hopefully to pass all of the resolutions that have been submitted by the administration and the council must approve so hud will terminate it’s relationship with the housing authority in regards to oversight,” said Clarke.
Clarke says a representative from City Council will also be appointed.
“We are intimately involved in providing affordable housing across the city so it made sense for council to have some involvement,” said Clarke.
There will be elections in September of next year among tenants of the housing authority for their new representatives.
The housing authority has been under federal supervision since the departure of embattled chief Carl Greene. He left two years ago under allegations that he sexually harassed his staff at the city housing agency.
