Park(ing) Day returns September 20
Park(ing) Day is slated to return to Philly streets for the sixth time on Friday, September 20, turning dozens of metered parking spaces into temporary public spaces.
Cars don’t rule the world and Park(ing) Day is a day to show off just how much can be done with an everyday parking space. Last year’s Park(ing) Day saw 59 installations in parking spaces all over town – more than double 2011’s participants – showcasing games, art, neighborhood groups, eco-friendly efforts, participatory crafts, or just offering pleasant places to sit.
Typically city agencies, design firms, and civic organizations build these tiny public spaces, but some of my favorites have been done by regular folks just out to reclaim a bit of asphalt. If you’re interested, now’s the time to sign up for your own Park(ing) Day space. So far 25 groups are are on board (check out the map below).
