Oyster Creek nuclear plant restarted after planned refueling
The nation’s oldest operating nuclear plant is once again working at full power.
The Oyster Creek plant in Lacey Township resumed normal operations shortly after 8 a.m. Friday. That came nearly a month after it went offline for maintenance work and a planned refueling.
Crews performed more than 4,000 maintenance activities during the outage and replaced nearly one-third of the reactor’s fuel to keep the unit running safely and efficiently for another two-year cycle.
Oyster Creek is located about 60 miles east of Philadelphia. It generates enough electricity to power 600,000 homes, or roughly all the homes in Monmouth and Ocean counties combined.
The plant’s operators have said it will close in 2019. The final refueling outage is planned for 2018.
