Observing Philadelphia’s top 10 corners for drug dealers
The cover story in the current issue of Philadelphia Weekly promises a listing of the city’s top 10 active corners for drug dealing. Its author, Steve Volk, is a senior writer at Philadelphia Magazine and spoke to Dave Heller on Newsworks Tonight.
Volk describes his six-month-long investigative effort, which involved him patroling on foot what he called “the badlands” of the Fairhill/Kensington area of the city. Nine of the top 10 “hot” corners are there, the corner of Kensington and Somerset being number one.
The experience allowed him to observe the illicit selling processes at these corners and to observe the police response. His primary conclusions are that police cannot solve this problem alone and that it might be time for questions of drug legalization to be discussed in a serious way.
