Nutter extends weekend curfew in Philadelphia

The city of Philadelphia is extending the 9 p.m. weekend curfew in targeted areas.

Mayor Michael Nutter says the decision was made to keep the curfew during the weekends for minors in Center City and University City for the time being while the entire city curfew is being reviewed.

“The present hours of the curfew maybe a little longer than they should be but the weekend targeted area curfew we thought should stay in effect until we have the more comprehensive full-blown how we are dealing with weekdays, weekends, different ages of children, how you deal with issues during the course of the school year, during the weekdays as opposed to during the summer,” said Nutter.

The weekday curfew, which is 10:30 p.m. for minors 13 and older 9 p.m. for minors 12 and younger, will remain for now.

Nutter imposed the earlier curfew to try to discourage violent “flash mobs.”
