Hey Streeters: This week you can light up your bike, learn about the craft of sign painting, talk design, and think preservation. Enjoy! 

ILLUMINATE: Free Bike Light Installations

Monday, November 4, 4:30-6pm. Broad Street at Spruce and Pine streets. The Bicycle Coalition wants to help city cyclists safer during winter’s dark commutes. If you don’t have lights, bring your bike on over to Broad Street this evening to visit BCGP’s two bike light stations for a free installation. City law requires a white front light and at least a red rear reflector. Free.

PAINT: Gibbs Connors: Vital Signs

Monday, November 4, 6pm. Temple Contemporary, 2001 North 13th Street. Gibbs Connors, one of Philly’s last sign painters, will be giving a hands-on demonstration on the traditional craft of sign painting as part of Temple’s ongoing “Vital Signs” project to restore “ghost signs” on buildings in the city in partnership with Mural Arts. DISCUSS: Design Advocacy Group November meeting

Thursday, November 7, 8am (sharp!). Center for Architecture, 1218 Arch Street. Join DAG for its monthly meeting on all things design and development in Philly. Free.

ENGAGE: Preservation Law and Policy Symposium

Thursday, November 7, 6pm and Friday November 8, 8:30-4pm. PennDesign, Meyerson Hall, 210 South 34th Street. Do our historic preservation policies work? Is the field in a crisis of legitimacy? Come to this meeting of the minds to see how Philly’s experience stacks up against that of other peer cities and gain national perspective on local preservation issues. J. Peter Byrne, Georgetown Law professor, will give the keynote talk on Thursday evening on the state of preservation law nationwide. All day Friday speakers will explore ideas about preservation and economic development, legal challenges, and studies from American cities. Free. Register online in advance.
